Work Supports
Overview
Working families in New York State may be eligible for a variety of work supports including federal, state and New York City tax credits, Food Stamp benefits and many other supports. See OTDA's Resources for Working Families page for more information.
A working family that receives a combination of work supports can significantly increase their income. The first two charts below show how some of the available work supports - Food Stamp benefits, Earned Income Tax Credit (state and federal), and other child-related state and federal tax credits - can significantly increase the household income of a single working parent with two children. The second chart represents the same family living in, with the additional tax credit they would receive as residents.
With wages alone, this family's income is below the federal poverty level, but a combination of wages plus work supports raises them well over the federal poverty level. This family could be eligible for additional work supports as well.
The third chart below, Family and Work Supports, shows additional programs that are available to working individuals and families at different income levels. The lowest income families are eligible for the most work support programs. But some programs continue to support working families as their wages increase, even when they earn up to four times the federal poverty level.
